The awkward girl resurfaces
It’s been a strange month. Whether it was the end of Summer or something unconscious, October marked a retreat of myself as a writer. I removed myself largely from Social Media and took time out as I felt the effort I was putting in wasn’t creating any measurable result. Hours spent away from the family doing takeovers where three people turn up, or even ones where you talk to lots of people, but no-one downloads your book. I just saw it all as a waste and became very low and negative.
The feelings of self doubt are back and with that I’ve decided to regroup a little. Promotion will be diarised so that I’m not overwhelmed by the pressure of it all. I’m back writing. It’s NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month, and I have a 50k target to reach. That’s a deadline I can enjoy. At the end of it, there’s a result, a partial book. So November and December will largely be writing. I’ve also committed to a short story for an advent blog and a Christmas Alphabet scene for my sister’s blog. With a one week sale for my second book, occurring the first week of December, that’s enough for now. November is looking like an almost ghostlike sales and Kindle Unlimited download month. Maybe I should rename the article this month The Disappearance of the Invisible Writer!
I’m a natural introvert and retreating is part of who I am. Right now I’m longing for a beautiful writing cabin in the woods. That said, I can’t let myself get too comfy. So I’m giving myself permission to retreat and write for now. But New Year requires New Goals, 2015 is the year I attend four book signings. So I declare here that next month’s column will see me publicly declaring resolutions that I have to do. It’ll be public, so I’ll be accountable. I’m already scared.
In the meantime you’ll find me hiding under the duvet.
